Who We Are

The School of Citizenship empowers schools to become engines of active citizenship by building the capacity of educators and leaders, and accompanying the implementation of school civic engagement projects. It fosters a national ecosystem rooted in democratic values, solidarity, and a sense of belonging. Through annual recognition and policy dialogue, it celebrates and amplifies the role of education in shaping active citizens across Lebanon.

Vision

We envision building a network of Lebanese schools — both public and private — that serve as incubators of active citizenship, where students, teachers, parents, and the broader school community practice and embody civic values. We would be shaping a generation of responsible, engaged citizens capable of driving our country with care and vision.

  • Engagement - Citizenship is not just a concept; it is lived and practiced every day. The School of Citizenship initiative empowers students to act, engage, and lead through real-life civic projects
  • Belonging - The School of Citizenship initiative promotes national unity and a shared sense of Lebanese identity, where students are encouraged to prioritize their role as citizens of Lebanon above all affiliations
  • Solidarity - The School of Citizenship is built on collaboration among ministries, universities, international partners, civil society, and schools themselves, because change requires a collective effort
  • Responsibility - The School of Citizenship initiative instills a culture of responsibility, where students learn that every choice and action carries impact on themselves, on their school, and on the future of their country.

Impact

By strengthening citizenship in schools, we:

  • Empower Schools to become Civic Catalysts
    • Schools are equipped and supported to become engines of civic transformation—nurturing democratic values, critical thinking, and a deep sense of civic responsibility among students
  • Strengthen Educators and Leadership Capacity
    • Teachers and principals receive targeted training to integrate civic engagement into school life, enabling them to foster more participatory, inclusive, and socially conscious learning environments
  • Grow Community-Based Civic Action Led by Our Youth
    • Students across Lebanon initiate and implement meaningful community projects, reinforcing their sense of belonging and their ability to act collectively for the common good
  • Build a National Platform for Recognition and Policy Dialogue
    • The initiative culminates in an annual national conference that celebrates exemplary practices, strengthens networks, and promotes evidence-based dialogue on the future of civic education in Lebanon

The initiative is overseen by a Steering Committee that oversees the strategic direction and budget of the initiative, ensuring transparency, accountability, and national and international reach. It is chaired by the First Lady of the Lebanese Republic, Mrs. Nehmat Aoun.
